Spot Removal: Sun Spots/Liver Spots

The first signs of aging usually appear on the face, hands, and arms, due to the large amount of sun exposure these areas receive. This combined with exposure to the elements and the natural aging process are all contributors to the development of freckles and dark spots on the skin. Age spots and freckles are pigmented lesions that are caused by excessive production of melanin in the skin. Although these spots and freckles cannot be considered medical emergencies, it is common for individuals to have them removed. Treatments include cryosurgery (liquid nitrogen) and laser spot removal.

Cryosurgery

Cryosurgery is the use of liquid nitrogen to freeze off the brown spots on your skin to reveal healthy skin beneath. Cryosurgery is a very common procedure used to remove not only brown spots but also warts, some skin cancers, and other skin lesions. This is a quick, minimally invasive procedure that provides efficient results.

Will Crysourgery hurt?

Cyrosurgery can be a relatively painful procedure, however the procedure is brief. Anesthetic is not commonly used during this procedure, but it can be requested in the appointment if necessary. Pain (or stinging) in the treated area will typically last a few hours for approxmately 1-3 days.

What is treatment like?

Healing of the treatment site usually takes 7-14 days with little to no scarring. Immediately following the treatment, you will usually experience some stinging and swelling. Occasionally a blister may form on the treatment site, but it will go away after a few days.

Laser Spot Removal

Lasers can now effectively remove about 90% to 95% of pigmented lesions. With advanced light systems, lasers can convert electrical energy into an intense light. Different light systems can produce different colors or wavelengths of light, which can be used to treat specific areas of your skin. This procedure can typically remove dark spots completely in 1-2 treatments depending on the size, color, and area of the body where the spot is found.

What can I expect after the treatment?

There may be a little discoloration of the skin treated after Dr. Myers performs his laser treatment. There can be redness and even some crusting of the treated site, but this usually improves over 7 to 14 days. There will still be some pinkness in the area. Use of ointments such as Vaseline during the healing period will increase the healing rate. Some discoloration may persist for several months on some patients.

Typically the spots will not return after the laser treatment, however new spots may appear as time goes by. Additional treatments with laser or cryotherapy can be performed if future spots appear. Use of sun protection can decrease the instance of sunspots.
