A common issue that many people deal with is lost facial volume. Skin starts to sag and crease, and the youthful look fades into an aged one. Restoring lost volume with facial fillers is a common and effective option that works great for bags under the eyes, facial creases, lost volume in the temples and more.
What Are Facial Fillers?
Juvederm Ultra, Restylane, Perlane, Belotero®, Voluma, Sculptra®, Bellafill, and Radiesse® are all Dermal Fillers. They are made of a colorless hyaluronic acid gel that is injected into facial tissue to smooth wrinkles and folds, especially around the nose and mouth. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar chain found in the human body. The role of hyaluronic acid in the skin is to deliver nutrients, hydrate the skin by holding in water, and to act as a cushioning agent. Radiesse contains calcium hydroxylapatite, which is also a naturally occurring biocompatible substance. It lasts longer (9-12 months) than hyaluronic acid and is used in the deep cheeks, under the eye, and temples. Bellafill, a permanent filler, often lasts 5-7 years. It adds volume to facial tissue and restores a smoother appearance. Many patients need at least one treatment of filler (though some may need two or more) to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing. The results last about 6 months, except Belotero, which lasts 4 months in fine, shallow wrinkles. The filler Sculptra is also considered a collagen stimulator.

How Can I Choose The Right Filler?
At Utah Valley Dermatology, we carry an assortment of dermal fillers. We have pure hyaluronic acid fillers, such as Juvederm and Restylane, and we have collagen stimulators, such as Sculptra and Radiesse.
While there is a good deal of overlap with where the individual fillers can be used, some are more suited for certain areas than others. Juvederm Voluma, for instance, is meant to return volume to sunken cheeks. Restylane Lyft, formerly known as Perlane, can be used to add volume to the backs of the hands.
When you come in for a consultation with Dr. Myers, he’ll find out the areas you’re seeking to treat and will discuss the different filler options that he thinks will best address those issues.
Which Facial Filler Can Treat Smile Lines?
Restylane, Versa, and Juvéderm deliver excellent results for smile lines, clinically known as nasolabial folds. When injected beneath these lines that run from the nose down to the corners of the mouth, the hyaluronic acid in these fillers instantly binds with nearby water molecules. This replaces lost volume and erases or dramatically reduces the appearance of smile lines.
Can Fillers Treat Acne Scars?
Fillers can be used for acne scarring. Bellafill, Restylane Lyft, and Radiesse are the best fillers for acne scarring. They reduce the appearance of certain types of acne scars, while improving the overall texture of the skin.
In the short term, these fillers add volume beneath the scars, helping minimize their depressions. Radiesse stimulates collagen production, having long-term effects as the new collagen it produces tends to break down scar tissue over time.

Lip augmentation, lip enhancement
Plump lips are very attractive, and a sign of youth. Naturally, many want a fuller look in their lips. There are several lip fillers that safely and effectively add volume to the lips.
Some are worried about lip injections because the lips are sensitive. But the procedure is simple and not painful. There may be a slight sting, but the doctor can provide a numbing agent beforehand to lessen the stinging.
Results are immediate and last for about half a year, generally. And after a lip filler procedure, your lips won’t feel strange. In fact, despite the change in shape and fullness, your lips won’t feel much different than your lips before.
And remember, this isn’t a permanent procedure. In time, your lips will go back to their original state.

Can Dermal Fillers Be Combined With Other Procedures?
You don’t want to have any facial skin treatments, such as laser skin resurfacing. But you could take care of some spider veins with sclerotherapy, or Dr. Myers could perform a skin check for skin cancer or actinic keratoses. Also, you can combine Botox injections with dermal fillers, as they work on different kinds of wrinkles on different areas of the face. Botox works on wrinkles formed by muscle contractions on the upper third of the face — crow’s feet, the 11s between your brows, and forehead lines.
Should I Avoid Anything After Dermal Fillers?
You shouldn’t touch or rub the injection sites for 6 hours after your treatment. It’s wise to avoid products like Retin-A for a couple days after your injections. Also, don’t have any facial skin treatments such as laser treatments, ultrasound, chemical peels, or microdermabrasion for about 2 weeks.
Can I Wear Makeup After Facial Filler Injections?
Your skin may be a little sensitive at your injection locations for 12 hours or so. You can apply makeup, but it’s good to wait 12 hours, if possible. If you must wear some, just take it easy.
Are Dermal Filler Injections Painful?
We apply topical numbing anesthetic prior to your dermal filler injections, so the sessions are not painful.
