The Eclipse Micropen skin needling system is a procedure that uses a group of “acupuncture-like” fine needles that create micro “injuries” to the skin. This allows for controlled induction of the skin’s self-repair mechanism, which triggers new collagen synthesis without the risk of permanent scarring. The result is typically smoother, firmer looking skin. Skin needling procedures are performed in a safe and precise manner with the use of a sterile Micropen needle head.
What Is Microneedling?
Also known as collagen induction therapy, the Eclipse Micropen skin microneedling system is a procedure that uses a group of “acupuncture-like” fine needles that create micro-injuries to the skin. This allows for controlled induction of the skin’s self-repair mechanism, which in turn triggers new collagen and elastin synthesis without the risk of permanent scarring, as well as making the body create new skin cells. The result is typically smoother, firmer looking skin. These procedures are performed in a safe and precise manner with the use of a sterile Micropen needle head.
The typical Micro Needling procedure is normally completed within 30-60 minutes depending on the required treatment and anatomical site.
What Does Microneedling Do?
What does microneedling do? In short, it treats a great variety of skin issues. This procedure is typically used to treat acne scarring, fine lines, wrinkles, medical or trauma scarring, stretch marks and hyper-pigmentation. A microneedling procedure can be done pretty much anywhere on the body, however the most common areas are the face, neck, and décolleté.
The side effects of microneedling are few. After the procedure, the skin could be red and flushed in appearance, similar to a mild sunburn. Individuals may experience skin tightness and mild sensitivity to touch on the area treated. This typically will diminish after a few hours following the treatment. Over the next 24 hours, the skin generally will be significantly improved (though rarely the healing takes a few days longer). In most cases, after three days the treated area has healed.
Every individual is different, however it is likely that a series of treatments may be required to obtain the patient’s desired outcome. The amount of necessary treatments can be discussed in your cosmetic consultation.
Microneedling Treatment Benefits
The benefits of this procedure are many, so we thought we should list them for your convenience:
- It is non-invasive and milder than other treatment types
- It utilizes the body’s own natural healing properties
- Has been shown to be as effective as treatments such as fractional lasers, but more tolerable by patients
- Shrinks pores, as it makes skin at micro-level slightly plumper effectively making pores appear smaller
- Improves efficacy of skin care products (lotion, creams) as it makes the skin easier to penetrate

How do skin injuries through microneedling improve my skin?
The concept behind microneedling is to trigger a wound healing response in the body. The body has an amazing ability to heal wounds, both the surface injury and the surrounding skin. In microneedling, when the 12 tiny needles puncture the skin to the depth appropriate for your particular skin condition (up to 2mm), they create microscopic channels down through the epidermis into the dermis layer. The wounds are microscopic and are surrounded by untouched, healthy tissue, which immediately helps in the healing of the adjacent punctures.
But your body perceives these punctures as injuries, and it initiates a wound-healing response. This involves producing new amounts of collagen and elastin to send to the “wounds” to heal them. Collagen is a protein responsible for providing the skin’s structural support framework. Elastin makes the skin firm, yet pliable. By building new collagen and elastin, the skin becomes more firm, supple, and issues such as stretch marks are noticeably lessened.
Who is a good candidate for microneedling treatment?
These treatments at Utah Valley Dermatology are easy to tolerate and don’t really involve any downtime, so pretty much anyone would benefit from the skin improvement achieved with microneedling. Unlike laser procedures, microneedling doesn’t cause hyperpigmentation. It can be used anywhere on the body, but the face, neck, and décolletage are the typical targets.
What skin issues can be improved with microneedling treatment?
As mentioned above, microneedling can be done across the body, but the face, neck, and décolletage are where we usually focus.
Here are the conditions we treat with microneedling:
- Fine lines
- Acne scars
- Large pores
- Uneven texture
- Stretch marks
What is the microneedling procedure like?
Before your microneedling session begins, our aesthetician attaches a new sterile 12-needle cartridge to the Eclipse MicroPen®. We then select the appropriate pen depth setting based on your treatment needs. A topical anesthetic and a thin layer of sterile saline are then applied to your skin. Next, in a single motion, the pen is gently pressed against the skin while simultaneously gliding across in one direction. This is repeated until the entire treatment area has been covered. Depending on your needs, a second pass may be made. As soon as she has completed the passes, an oatmeal extract with vitamin E is applied to your skin to calm it and start the healing process.
You’d think this would be a painful treatment, but it’s not. Applying topical anesthetic prior to your microneedling session keeps you comfortable. Patients equate the feeling to being similar to having a piece of light sandpaper moved across the skin.
How do I care for my skin after my microneedling treatment?
Due to the microscopic wounds created in your skin, you don’t return to your normal skincare routine immediately. After your session, your skin will look as if you have a mild to moderate sunburn. It will feel warm and somewhat tight. These sensations pass in a day or two. Hyaluronic acid is an ideal ingredient for hydration and to help calm your skin. You should only use gentle cleansers and warm water on your face for three days after your microneedling session. No scrubbing with Clarisonic or exfoliating for one week.
Don’t use makeup for 24 hours, if possible. Protect your skin against sun exposure for 1-2 weeks. Don’t use swimming pools or hot tubs for three days.
When will I see results and how long will they last?
Our Utah Valley Dermatology patients notice an immediate “glow” to their skin. Visible changes with the skin develop over the course of several days and weeks. Due to the building collagen and elastin, your results can continue to improve for up to four months.
As for the duration of your improvements, that depends on your body. The changes are permanent, but as you age your collagen and elastin production drops year by year. That’s why continuing treatments are recommended to keep up with these decreases.
How many microneedling treatments will I need?
Some of our patients feel they only need a single microneedling treatment every year to achieve the results they seek. Most patients opt for 3-6 treatments spaced about 4-6 weeks apart. For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks, or acne scars, 6-8 sessions will likely be recommended spaced at 6-week intervals.
Does microneedling affect dermal fillers?
There hasn’t been any research on this, but at Utah Valley Dermatology, we advise our patients to wait at least two weeks after having dermal fillers before they have microneedling. The fillers need to fully settle into place before having microneedling.
