7 Types of Dermal Fillers

While the phrase “dermal fillers” might automatically make you uneasy, these simple procedures tend to be an ideal option for many patients.

From restoring youthful volume and enhancing natural beauty to filling in scars or other damage, different types of dermal fillers can leave your skin feeling rejuvenated and refreshed. Let’s take a look at some of the most common options.

Where Can I Get Dermal Fillers?

With a minimally invasive procedure, dermal fillers can create a youthful look that refreshes features and reduces wrinkles or sagging in different areas:

  • Lips: Enhance fullness and refine shape.
  • Cheeks: Bring back full volume and contour.
  • Smile Lines: Smooth out deep lines on the nasolabial folds running from the nose to the mouth.
  • Forehead: Soften fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Under-Eye Hollows: Reduce dark circles and fill in hollows.
  • Jawline: Define and contour the face shape.
  • Hands: Restore lost volume, reduce wrinkles, and improve appearance of veins and tendons.

7 Types of Dermal Fillers that Rejuvenate Your Skin

There are a wide variety of fillers available, and each uses different ingredients and processes to freshen up your skin.

1. Hyaluronic Acid (HA)

Your body naturally makes HA, but production tends to decrease with age. These types of dermal fillers increase the volume and hydration of your skin and are especially good for the lips, cheeks, jawline, and under-eye area.

2. Collagen Stimulators

Other collagen stimulators such as polycaprolactone (PCL) can also be injected into the skin to promote smoother, firmer skin; reduce wrinkles; and restore volume.

3. Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA)

PMMA is different from other types of dermal fillers because it isn’t absorbed by the body, which is why it’s considered semi-permanent. The filler includes a collagen gel and small polymer capsules (aka microspheres) that stay underneath the skin to fill in deep scars or laugh lines

4. Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA)

CaHA is a mineral produced in the bones and is denser than HA. It plumps the skin and encourages collagen production, making it effective for filling in deeper lines and wrinkles.

5. Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA)

PLLA also stimulates collagen production, but it’s a synthetic gel that isn’t naturally produced in the body. It works well for enhancing lip volume and shape and filling in deep laugh or smile lines.

6. Polyalkylimide

Polyalkylimide is another semi-permanent filler used to reduce scars or other deep damage and enhance lips, cheekbones, and jawlines. It’s injected as a gel that can then be sculpted to the right shape. Over time, a thin layer of collagen forms around the gel to enhance the area.

7. Autologous Fat Grafting

Also known as fat transfer, autologous fat grafting is different from traditional dermal fillers. In this procedure, fat is removed from one area of the body (like the thighs or belly) and moved to another (like the face). It’s often used to enhance cheekbones and smooth facial scars, but it can also be used for breast reconstruction, hand fillers, and more.
